I've learned that when you're in a high conflict relationship (and you realize it), the first thing you want to do is to get a better understanding of what exactly is going on. You want clarity. So here's a review to familiarize you with high conflict relationships, high conflict personality disorders and what it means for you.

A High Conflict Relationship Is

A high conflict relationship is a relationship between two people where at least one of them is a high conflict personality. These relationships are characterized by chaos, conflict, ups and downs, and a general sense of "this relationship is unhealthy".

A High Conflict Personality Disorder Is

A high conflict personality disorder causes conflict in interpersonal relationships. There are six primary types of high conflict personality disorders.

These are: narcissistic, borderline, histrionic, paranoid, obsessive-compulsive, and antisocial. These personality disorders end up creating significant conflict when they try to meet their emotional needs in unhealthy ways.

In the High Conflict Relationships Program, we explore each of these personality disorders -- as they apply to the role of the person in your life. For example, you may be dealing with a narcissistic mother, a borderline coworker, and an anti-social loved one or partner. Each of these relationships present a unique challenge. But there are some patterns to be aware of and a framework for beginning the hard work of freeing yourself from the emotional drain of the relationship.
